Take a Day Trip to Cape Sounion

Cape Sounion is located at the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula (or Attica) in Greece. This is a historical region that encompasses Athens. The history of Attica is closely tied to that of Athens, especially the Golden Age during the classical period. Here’s what you should do when taking a day trip to Cape Sounion.

Relax at Sounio Beach

Located 70 kilometers from Athens, you will find Sounio Beach. This beach is quiet and tranquil, so if you’re looking for a spot to relax and get away from the excitement of sight-seeing, this is the place for you.

This beach is organized with sun-beds and umbrellas for rent. There are facilities including free parking, showers, washrooms, and a beach bar. This sandy beach is a nice place to watch the sunset from. The water at Sounio Beach is clear and shallow.

One of the best features of this beach is that it is located under the Temple of Poseidon. Other beaches you will find nearby include Pasas and Akti Asimaki.

Visit the Temple of Poseidon

Near the edge of a cliff you will find the Temple of Poseidon. The Ancient Greek temple was built around 444 – 440 BC and is one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. For three centuries the temple was a sacred place.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon was a god who carried a trident and controlled the sea. The temple is located about 200 meters above sea level. Eighteen of the original thirty-six columns remain today. From the Temple of Poseidon miles of the Aegean Sea can be seen as well as amazing sunsets. People gather at the temple each evening just to view the sunset.

Throughout the years, people have marked, initialed, and graffitied the temple, but the most famous was by Lord Byron in 1810,who famously carved his initials into a column. When visiting Cape Sounion, you should plan a stop at the Temple of Poseidon. The historical ruins and breathtaking landscape should not be missed. Other ruins you can explore include Sanctuary of Athena and Temple of Athena.

Take a Tour

A day trip means limited time to explore, so if you want to get the most out of your time at Cape Sounion, you can book a tour with an experienced guide. You are sure to find a tour to suit your needs as there are many to choose from.

You can opt for a private tour or a group tour. You can choose a tour that takes you from Athens (if you’re coming from there) to Cape Sounion and to the Temple of Poseidon or one that will only take you around Cape Sounion.

There are also tours that include tasting Greek cuisine, watching the sunset, and a seaside drives along the coast of Apollo. If history is your focus, find a tour that focuses on that. If you’d rather enjoy local cuisine, you’ll want to choose a tour that includes at least one meal.

When visiting Cape Sounion, you will be treated to historical sites, amazing views, and delicious Greek food.
