Enjoy the Village of Oia While in Santorini

The island of Santorini is a popular travel destination in Greece, especially during peak travel season. The unique landscape and breathtaking views of the caldera, a large volcanic crater, add to its charm, and people flock here to capture some of the magic the island has to offer.

Oia is a small village that overlooks the caldera, and it is one that you should visit while on the island. Here’s a look at some of the things you should see and do while there:

Visit the Museums

Oia has a few small museums that are worth checking out during your visit. They won’t take you long to go through, so you can easily browse through them while walking the streets. The Nautical Museum of Santorini showcases the maritime history of the island and highlights some of the local traditions that are tied to the sea. The Santorini Museum of Musical Instruments is unique experience because it showcases a unique collection of instruments that dates all the way back to 2800 BC.

Watch the Sunset

Santorini is known for its sunsets, and Oia has some of the best views the island has to offer. There are certain areas of the village that are extremely popular. Once you arrive, ask the locals the best place to go and be sure to head there at least an hour before so you can get a good spot. This is especially important if you are planning to take pictures. Before arriving in Santorini, you may want to arrange for a room that has a good view of the caldera at sunset so you don’t even need to leave your room to see a great sunset!

Hike From Oia to Fira

One of the interesting ways to see the area is to hike from Oia to Fira. If you are into hiking, you will find the trek refreshing! Fira is a town located in the top part of the island. The distance between Oia and Fira is approximately 10 kilometers, or 6 miles. This walk takes place on a well-maintained pathway between the two towns, and you will be treated to amazing views almost the whole way through. Once you get to Fira, you can take a taxi back to Oia.

Taste Local Wine at Sigalas Estate

A visit to Santorini is not complete without a taste of its famous wine! Oia is home to one of the popular wineries in Santorini, the Sigalas Winery, which was founded in 1991. Sigalas Estate has produced and won awards for its superior quality wines. If you happen to be in Oia between April and October, you can add a trip to Sigalas Winery on your itinerary. The winery can accommodate up to 50 guests, and they offer guided tours around the vineyard. From the winery’s patio, you can take in the breathtaking sunset in the evening.

Eat at One of the Restaurants

Oia boasts of some of the best restaurants in Santorini. Some of the restaurants you must visit include Ambrosia and Nectar, Kandouini and Kyprida. These restaurants serve both local and international cuisines. Be sure to taste some of the local specialties, including the “Domatakeftedes,” or Tomato Croquettes, which are a popular treat when tomatoes are in season. Be sure to drink the local wines whenever possible!
